The Laa Family
A Jedi Dynasty of Felucia
The Laa family is one of the most renowned Twi’lek Jedi bloodlines in the history of the Galactic Republic, with roots deeply entwined with the vibrant and untamed jungles of Felucia. Known for their unique connection to nature, the Force, and an unyielding commitment to peace, the Laa lineage has produced generations of Jedi Knights and Masters. Their legacy is marked by wisdom, sacrifice, and a profound understanding of balance—not only in the Force, but also between the natural world and the conflicts of civilization.
Origins and Philosophy
The Laa family traces its origins to the early days of the Jedi’s frontier expansions when the Order sought to establish outposts in the far reaches of the Outer Rim. One of the first members of the family to join the Order, Master Myn Laa, chose to remain stationed on Felucia after successfully mediating peace between several nomadic tribes and a Republic-backed colony. Entranced by the planet’s raw, chaotic beauty, Myn believed that Felucia’s ecosystem, which thrived on symbiotic relationships between light and darkness, mirrored the Jedi’s own understanding of the Force—requiring balance and respect rather than dominance.
This philosophy became central to the Laa family’s Jedi identity: harmony through coexistence, strength through balance. Unlike many Jedi who sought to isolate themselves from emotion, the Laas believed in embracing one’s emotions without becoming enslaved by them. They viewed the Force as not only a tool but a living entity that connected all beings, demanding both humility and responsibility.
The Jungle Guardians: Deep Connection to Nature
Felucia, with its towering fungi, bioluminescent flora, and predatory fauna, shaped the Laa family in unique ways. Jedi trained in the jungles of the planet learned to listen to the rhythms of nature and honed their abilities in Force empathy—the ability to sense the thoughts and intentions of creatures both sentient and wild. The Laas became known for their ability to tame hostile creatures or redirect dangerous animals without violence, seeing even the fiercest predator as part of the planet’s natural balance.
This natural empathy with life also made many Laa Jedi excellent healers and diplomats. Through deep meditation, they developed a specialized Force technique called The Pulse of Verdance, which allowed them to commune with plant life and accelerate healing or manipulate flora to aid in combat. On Felucia, these abilities allowed the family to maintain peace between local tribes and offworld settlers while safeguarding the delicate ecosystem from exploitation by outsiders.
The Generational Masters and Their Impact
Over generations, the Laa family produced several notable Jedi Knights and Masters, whose deeds reverberated across the galaxy:
-
Master Zhela Laa – Known as the “Peacemaker of Ryloth,” Zhela helped negotiate the end of a bloody trade dispute between the Twi’lek homeworld and a powerful mining cartel. She was revered for her diplomatic prowess, solving conflicts with empathy and insight rather than force. Zhela was also instrumental in preventing a Sith-aligned faction from turning the cartel into a proxy army, avoiding a broader galactic war.
-
Jarro Laa, the Wildblade – Unlike the calm negotiators of his family, Jarro was a battle-hardened Jedi Knight who earned his name defending Kashyyyk from Trandoshan raiders. Jarro developed a unique style of lightsaber combat—combining Form V (Djem So) with natural terrain awareness, using vines, mud, and even hostile plants to trap and overwhelm opponents. His famous twin cyan lightsabers, which hummed like distant waterfalls, became a symbol of the Laa’ duality: beauty and strength in perfect unity.
-
Master Kyo Laa – A mystic deeply attuned to the cosmic Force, Kyo was known for her visions of future events, many of which saved Jedi missions from disaster. Her prophecies, however, were notoriously cryptic, often couched in metaphors inspired by Yavin IV’s natural cycles—such as storms, blooms, or predatory behavior. Although she rarely engaged in direct combat, Kyo’s wisdom was sought by Jedi across the galaxy, and her writings on how to find balance between knowledge and instinct remain part of Jedi training holocrons today.
The Laa Heirloom: A Lightsaber That Grows
One of the most fascinating artifacts tied to the Laa family is the Living Saber, a unique lightsaber hilt constructed by Aresh Laa during his exile on Felucia. The hilt is crafted from bioluminescent bark and the tendrils of an ancient Felucian tree, giving it an organic, vine-like appearance that shifts and grows slightly over time. The blade it produces shines with a vibrant green hue, and the crystal embedded inside—rumored to have been purified from a Sith relic—resonates with a rare harmonious energy, making the saber hum softly in the presence of living beings.
The hilt’s organic nature reflects the Laa philosophy: a Jedi’s weapon must grow and adapt just as the Jedi themselves must.Passed from generation to generation, the Living Saber is only entrusted to those in the family who demonstrate mastery not just in combat, but in the wisdom of restraint and renewal.
Tragedy and Legacy: The Fall of Jarro Laa
Though the Laa family produced many heroes, their legacy was not without tragedy. Jarro Laa, the Wildblade, fell victim to the same strength that made him a hero. During a prolonged campaign against Trandoshan mercenaries and Sith infiltrators operating on Felucia, Jarro grew frustrated with the Jedi Council’s caution and reluctance to confront the enemy directly. In his desire to defend his homeworld, he began to employ ruthless tactics, including ambushes and guerrilla warfare—methods that strayed dangerously close to the Dark Side.
When he finally drove the raiders from Felucia, he did so at the cost of his own soul. Consumed by the thrill of battle, Jarro vanished into the depths of the jungle, becoming a ghostly figure in the legends of Felucia. Some believe he succumbed to the Dark Side and lives as a rogue warrior among the wild beasts, while others insist that he still protects the planet—an unseen guardian, neither Jedi nor Sith. His fall became a cautionary tale within the family, serving as a reminder that even the most noble intentions can be corrupted without balance.
The Modern Laas: Guardians in a Changing Galaxy
In the later centuries of the Old Republic, the Laa family remained active, though their influence began to shift. As the Jedi Order became more centralized on Coruscant, some members of the family found it increasingly difficult to reconcile the political entanglements of the Republic with the peaceful ways they had cultivated on Felucia. Many Laas chose to remain on their homeworld, serving as watchers over the natural world and advisors to local communities, rather than fully immersing themselves in the bureaucracy of the Jedi Council.
However, a few Laa Jedi still ventured into the wider galaxy. One of the most recent known descendants, Master Soo Laa, played a critical role during the final peaceful days of the Republic, working as a Jedi Consular and serving the Yavin IV Academy as a local grand master. She worked tirelessly to uncover Imperial plots hidden within trade networks. Soo, armed with the family’s ancient Living Saber, upheld the legacy of her ancestors, blending diplomacy, combat skill, and deep spiritual wisdom. She embodied the Laa ideal: a Jedi who could fight when needed but always sought peace first.
A Legacy Rooted in Balance
The Laa family of Felucia stands as a shining example of the Jedi philosophy in practice—balancing power with compassion, strength with humility, and action with reflection. Their connection to Felucia’s wild ecosystem shaped their approach to the Force, making them guardians not only of civilization but of life itself in all its forms. Through diplomacy, healing, and combat, they left a lasting impact on both their homeworld and the greater galaxy.
But more than their deeds, it is the lessons embedded in their legacy that endure: that true strength lies in restraint, that wisdom grows in harmony with nature, and that even the most skilled Jedi must always seek balance within themselves. As the galaxy changed, the Laa family remained steadfast—a living reminder that in the dance between light and dark, peace is both the beginning and the goal.
